Imagine the range of serious life-effecting consequences that result from the anxiety and stress of anticipating being viewed or treated as ‘less than” or being physically assaulted at possibly at every or any encounter. Our culture supports that kind of behavior by one person over another. All of us have internalized this behavior pattern to some extent. and are both recipients and purveyors of that behavior at times.
The phrases and words like white privilege and white supremacy describe attitudes but are not descriptive terms that indicates intent and consequences of behavior. Terms like sexism, and racism can be broaden to include those who regardless of color, gender, race or class use dominating behavior(DB) or support DB that limit one’s choices for life fulfilling options. The terms dominate or domination encompasses the ills that afflict most of our social justice issues. Our Western culture is one based on domination rather than on the alternative, nurturing.
At the face to face level, there can be two or more individuals each with their separate and different life experiences having a discussion that can devolve into a heated exchange where hurtful comments are made. This is a typical scenario for a conflict resolution process if all participants agree the racial, cultural, gender or other social identity component can be mutually explored.
